I’m a worrier. I don’t think I’d have got around the world a few years ago without being a worrier.

So this article will concentrate on the single “lady” being careful in Bangkok – or anywhere for that matter – rather than on the places she might want to visit.

First of all, I’d prefer “female” or “girl” or even “chick”. “Lady” sounds like a 1920s Englishwoman off on safari!

OK, so pack an extra pair of panties! That’s what you’d expect me to say, right? But that’s for a separate article.

When a girl is travelling alone, there are different rules and regulations than there are for a boy travelling alone. Often BECAUSE of boys travelling alone.

In Bangkok, unless you’re a well-seasoned traveller, DON’T just turn up at a backpackers’ hostel and ask for a bed. Even if you don’t get offered one in the corner of a room full of men smoking goodness-knows-what (and it does happen!), you’ll at best be squeezed into a women’s dorm in which are girls who return, drunk, at 2 a.m. and spend the rest of the night between bed and bathroom.

Ah, the bathroom! Bangkok’s aren’t the worst in the world (those are in Hong Kong in my experience) and they usually DO provide paper, but the female traveller ALWAYS needs to be wary of them! Travellers from the U.S. please remember – Eastern facilities are rarely “restrooms”.

If you sit, hold your bag on your lap; if you squat, strap it around our neck before you even drop your jeans. WHEREVER you travel, carry some tissues with you and always have some spare ones in your bags back at the hotel. There are few day-to-day things worse in life than there being no tp!

Back to bed. If you DO have to bunk in shared accommodation, keep your valuables in the bed with you – either in pockets of whatever you wear (and do wear something!) or under the sheet you’re lying on.

If you have a quick check of your belongings everytime you move, you’ll never forget them. The easiest way to do this is by choosing a phrase or sentence to represent your important things. (E.G. carrying a purse, tickets, money, keys, tampons and passport? The initials are P, T, M, K, T, P, so make up a silly phrase you’ll always remember. Something rude is often best (!), but here we’ll settle for “Please Take My Kettle To Paris”. Say that 10 times a day and you’ll soon know if anything’s missing!).

Where to hide things when on the move? Well, you’re a woman. An obvious hiding place for money is in your bra. If someone tries to pinch it from there, believe me, you’ll

How to fix Chinas problems

Posted on 29 Aug 2010 In: Hong Kong Hotels

A really good way to help fix China’s problems is to make friends there. Here is my story….

* The Illustrious Madam Liu: Working for a Hardcore Communist Chinese Boss

A rough Start in China……….

A little more than ten years ago, I had the great fortune to travel to China and to live and work there for several years. The beginning was tough because the first company I had signed on with ended up being somewhat flakey and unclear about the mission it wanted me to fulfill.

Under that company’s flag I lived in Hong Kong for a few months, and then I was transferred to Shanghai to start up a new branch there. Within weeks after arriving in Shanghai, I sent a report to the office in Hong Kong stating that the new venture would probably not show a profit until after two years. Upon hearing this, the Hong Kong office peremptorily decided to fire me, and relayed instructions for me to pack up and go home.

I had been sacked

Digging In……….

Within days upon my arrival in Shanghai, I knew that Hong Kong was no comparison to Shanghai. The city “On the Sea” (Shanghai’s literal meaning) was the place for me. I would have done anything to stay there.

I had been fired, but I shot a message back to the Hong Kong office telling them to get stuffed. I determined to forgo their offer to ship my worldly belongings back to America. At the end of that day, I was left with a large pile of unpacked boxes in my apartment, no job, no prospect for a job, enough cash to fill the palm of only one hand, and a lot of hope and love for this new and wonderful city a city under whose dazzling bright lights I found myself basking.

After about two weeks of frantic job searching, I started to become disheartened. Money was soon running out, and the prospect of losing a foothold in my new home was an ever-growing nightmare on the immediate horizon. I stopped myself in the midst of my panic, and stood in the middle of my home. I forced myself to relax and spoke aloud, intending exactly what I felt in my heart: I had to stay in Shanghai.

Luckily I stayed on for some of the best years of my life.

A New Job & The Amazing Lars……….

The day after making this resolution, I made a telephone call to the right place at the right time.

On a lark I decided to call one of my previous employer’s main competitors. After being passed around on the phone a few times, I ended up speaking with Lars Amstrup, a wonderful Danish man who was later to become

This popular package has been designed to accommodate CCIE Voice Lab exam candidates who are purely interested in focusing on some selected areas of study. You will study with your instructor one-on-one during the training. Step by step, our highly skilled instructors will show you the best way to configure each scenario and strengthen any areas of your skills as required.

Before you finish this course, you will be provided a full set of our full-scale lab materials (which mirrors the most current lab exam). The materials contain CCIE Voice questions, requirements and solutions, which can be comfortably studied and practiced during the period between your course finishing date and the lab exam date.

Interesting Place

Many Interesting Place in Hong Kong. It is the Bun Festival on Cheung Chau Island.

The Bun Festival is local to the Island of Cheung Chau only. The Bun Festival is

usually in May. About two weeks before the festival, people on Cheung Chau Island

build a tall bun tower in front of the temple there. They build the tower with steel and bamboo now. It is about fourteen meters high. They cover the tower with sweet buns. Bun towers are built with bamboo structures 60 foot high, piled with sweet buns, outside the Pak Tai temple.

Since these buns are blessed, in the old days, people climbed up the bun towers and compete for buns at midnight on the first day of the festival. It was supposed the appease the spirit of the people who died in a 19th Century plague on the island. Unfortunately, accident happened in 1978.

The Bun towers collapsed under the weight of too many climbers and more than 100 people were injured. Since then, there is no more competition. Bun are distributed to the believers after the ceremony. You can also buy these buns from local bakers.

Three days before festival procession, people on Cheung Chau Island do not sell or eat meat. They only eat vegetarian. Most restaurants sell vegetarian dishes and some-simply close. However, when the procession is finished, everything goes back to normal.

On the festival day, there is a procession along the main streets. There are lion dances and colorful floats. There are people playing Chinese music too. The procession is the best part of the festival. Different local communities arrange their own floats. Children are put on to a tiny seat attached to steel rods so that they look as though they are floating or standing high up on top of pole.

People stand in the streets and watch the procession.

Colorful costumes help to cover up the seat. However, it’s still hard work for 5 year-old. under the hot 28 Celsius afternoon Sun in May. The most exciting event is at midnight. It is the Bun-scrambling Competition. People compete to get the highest score. The competitors have three minutes to climb up the bun tower and pick the buns. The buns at the bottom have the fewest points and the buns at the top have the most points.

The procession is carried out on the Buddhist birthday ( public holiday ) so that everybody can enjoy the festival. Before that, Cheung Chau schools simply closed on the procession days because the children were either participating in the procession or escaping from school so that they can watch.

Tips for you……….

You want to take a ferry from central to Cheung Chau.

By ferry takes about fifty minutes to get there.

You know that you’re in Hong Kong when:

..Your mobile phone rings while you’re shopping for dried seafoods and ginseng at a cluttered stall shadowed by a gleaming sky scraper.

..You’re eating bird’s nest soup next to a woman wearing a fashionable anti-pollution face mask matching her make-up.

..You’re heading upstairs with a stomach full of tea & dimsum when the person behind you glides up to say “m-goi” meaning “excuse me” and you will notice that everybody is standing on the right handside of the escalator except you.

..You’re on the busy street jampacked with bustling crowd holding cellphones and mp3′s dangling on their neck, group of tourists holding shopping bags, and a man in coat and tie holding a leather suitcase and eating a stick of hot sauced fishballs!

This is Hong Kong! A city of life, full of suprises, cultures, delicious foods, shopping, night life, beaches, lots of things to do and much more to be discovered!

More than $20 billion dollars worth of destruction was the result of the most damaging earthquake in China since 1950, unearthing the realization that the nation’s insurance industry is years behind those of the world’s biggest economies.

One official from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, who refused to be named, stated that only 5% of the cost of the overwhelming mass of damage in Sichuan Province was covered by insurance.

When compared to the U.S., and their handling of Hurricane Katrina, the most costly storm in their history, which was insured by companies and the federal government, resulting in around 50% of the $120 billion damages being covered, there is something quite obviously wrong in China.

“The earthquake underscores how much room insurers have to penetrate into rural China,” said Zhang Ling, who oversees $1.1 billion for ICBC Credit Suisse Asset Management Co. from Beijing and holds Ping An Insurance (Group) Co. shares. “There’ll be much more momentum and government support to do that after this year’s natural disasters.”

Even the nations largest insurers China life insurance Co. and Ping An have no managed to expand across China. According to statistics found by KPMG international, out of a nation of 1.3 billion people, only 4% have insurance. Again worrying in comparison to America, where 77% have some form of life insurance policy.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.9, has effected around half of the 20 million people living in Sichuan, obliterating their homes and buildings, leaving 30, 000 people still under rubble, and with a death toll of around 20, 000.

“If a disaster like this happened in Europe or the U.S., the claims situation would be very different,” said Michael Spranger, a Hong Kong-based earthquake analyst at Munich Re, the world’s No. 2 reinsurer, after Swiss Re. “Natural disaster coverage rates are very low across Asia, in the single digits.”

The chief economist for Swiss Re Asia in Hong Kong, Clarence Wong has stated that the Niigata earthquake, which hit central Japan last July, resulted in a cost of $3 billion, 10% of which being the insured losses.

The earthquake in China happened 4 months after the country’s most powerful snowstorms in 50 years, so damaging that 1 million citizens had to evacuate.

This means that insurers will be becoming far more competitive when it comes to finding sales in rural areas, with their wages endangered by the years 26% decline in China’s benchmark CSI 300 Index threatens earnings growth.

The company China Life has had an overall profit fall of 61% in the first quarter, with Ping An’s yield rising at its slowest since opening.

“The earthquake is not expected to have a material impact on the balance sheets” of Chinese insurers, wrote Hong Kong- based Fitch Ratings analysts Stanley Tsai and Jeffrey Liew in a May 15 report. “That said, the losses arising from the tragic event, coupled with the poor performance of the A-share market in the first few months of 2008, will put pressure on the insurers’ earnings for the year.”

It is now clear that getting its rural and natural disaster insurance better is a prime concern for the Chinese Government. The industry regulator official in Beijing believes that China may be planning to set up a natural disaster insurance system, which would be paid for by the government as well as involving the private-sector.

Zurich based Swiss Re have announced that the insurance penetration in China, a measurement of premiums as a percentage of gross domestic product, turned out to be around 2.9% last year, coming 49th in the world ranking

“Earthquake insurance penetration is generally very low, and for residential covers practically non-existent,” says Peter Zimmerli, a vice president in Swiss Re Asia’s property and casualty group.

The United States should always show respect to the wishes of allies and ‘friends’ however, we should stop being a door mat because a nation is a profitable business partner. China’s deplorable human rights record, environmental abuses, and production of unsafe goods are clear indicators that our political leadership is more interested in making a buck than doing what is best for those who elected them.

Nixon opened the door in the 1970s when it was infinitely better to have a friendly China. In the 1980s we went back and forth about China. Our rhetoric over their abuses was toned down considerably as they began to emerge as an economic power. Then Clinton seemed to decide all was forgiven and forgotten in favor of ‘most favored nation’ status. This means they can impose enormous tariffs and restrictions on our goods but we don’t reciprocate. Bush Junior after getting elected sunned himself in Hawaii with drinking buddy Deng. So the circle was then complete, both sides of the aisle decided abuses be damned, China was again a place to make money.

Based on this historic change of tune about China the issue is simple. While China treats us with disdain we take the abuse because American corporations are making record profits thanks to cheap Chinese labor and substandard products. Those same businesses pay huge contributions (bribes) to elect leaders who keep the gravy train rolling.

I would caution that using language like ‘retaliate’ is a bit Junior High School. I think our rhetoric and actions should reflect a mature and firm determination that while China may be a profitable trade partner it does not buy that nation the right to dictate and enjoy unfair terms with the United States.

Truly a ‘do unto others…’ mentality would be appropriate. If China does not want our naval vessels to make port in Hong Kong or other destinations then we have every right to extend the same ban on their vessels. The problem is the leaders who would act in such a manner do not currently reside in Washington D.C. Cold hard reality is that both Democrats and Republicans are drawing enormous bribes, I mean campaign contributions from Chinese, Asian, and American businesses to keep things just as they are.

Very often United States foreign policy follows the dollar. We tell Europeans to stay out of the Americas thanks to the Monroe Doctrine only to violate it when it suits our need for profit which politicians try to justify with veiled attempts at stopping communism, terrorism, or any ism that endangers profits. Same thing in the Middle East. Sure removing Saddam from power was a good thing but sticking around to try and turn Iraqis into citizens of a democracy is more about money than any enlightened desire for freedom.

China is one on a long list of ‘allies’ who treats our nation with disrespect, but we take it because those in power to do something are making too much money to stop it. Clinton knew about China’s abuses of people and environment only to decide money was more important. Bush Junior was likewise well aware of dangerous products coming into our nation from China and the use of military personnel as forced factory labor (aka slaves) but decided swimming in Hawaii with Deng was more profitable than some pesky principles related to human rights, environmental controls, and protecting American consumers from substandard and dangerous products.

Therefore, China calls the tune that we are forced to dance to thanks to representatives who can be bought. In short corporate and Chinese money talks and American politicians are listening.
